Brain Training

When the brain works better, the mind is
regulated, the body is able to modulate
arousal & inhibition appropriately, behavior
improves, balance can be acheived and
relationships thrive.

About Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback (NFB); also called neurotherapy (NT), EEG biofeedback (EEGBF) is a form of training for the brain. It is a learning procedure. Like other forms of biofeedback, NT uses computer monitoring and feedback devices to provide moment-to-moment information to an individual on the state of their physiological functioning, this helps provide greater self regulation. Brain plasticity allows clients to train their brains to stabilize their mood, improve mental and physical functioning, increase or improve memory function and to normalize behavior. Neurotherapy has its foundations in basic and applied neuroscience as well as data-based clinical practice. When we train with NT we take into account behavioral, cognitive, relational and subjective aspects of a person in the context of their environment as well as monitoring and offering feedback and encouragement for improved brain activity. Neurotherapy meets the American Psychological Association's definition of an evidence-based intervention since NT is "...the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preference." At BRAINNS*, our neurotherapy treatment protocols are individualized or customized just for you.

We use brain mapping, objective assessment tools and initial evaluations during intake. We believe that every brain and every person is different or unique and responds differently to training. There are many ways to approach development of neurotherapy treatment protocols. It has become quite political among some practitioners discussing which models are the "right" ones. Most of our protocols are developed using qEEG brain mapping which reads electrical activity on the scalp at 21 sites and compares your EEG statistically to a normative data base using advanced mathematical computations. During NT training, sensors are placed on the scalp and then connected to sensitive electronics and computer software that detect, filter, amplify, and record specific brain activity. This information is fed back using computers virtually instantaneously with the conceptual understanding that changes in the feedback signal indicate whether or not brain activity is within the range determined appropriate by the original evaluation. Auditory signals, visual and sometimes tactile vibrations are used to indicate a brain in a desired "zone". "Based on this feedback, various principles of learning, and practitioner guidance, changes in brain patterns occur and are associated with positive changes in physical, emotional, and cognitive states".

NT is non invasive and can be used in combination with other methods of treatment. When provided by a licensed professional with appropriate training, clients very rarely experience negative side-effects. Typically clients find NT to be an interesting, rewarding experience.

Neurotherapy has been found to be a successful intervention for a broad range of symptoms. Conditions treated using neurofeedback include: Attention Deficit Disorder ADD/ADHD, addictions, anxiety, attachment issues, autism, aspergers, developmental delays, chronic fatigue or pain, cognitive deficits, depression, headaches, learning disabilities, eating disorders, brain injuries (TBI), obsessive compulsive or brain lock issues(OCD), perfectionism, post traumatic stress and combat related PTSD, seizure disorders, sleep disorders and insomnia, general stress reduction, stroke and trauma. NT has been applied effectively in educational settings to facilitate improved academic performance. This form of treatment has been used to help maximize the performance of athletes, artists, and executives. Lasting positive changes have been researched over time supporting the efficacy of successful neurotherapy treatment.

"Being a self-regulation method, NT differs from other accepted research-consistent neuro-modulatory approaches...At a neuronal level, NT teaches the brain to modulate excitatory and inhibitory patterns of specific neuronal assemblies and pathways based upon the details of the sensor placement and the feedback algorithms used thereby increasing flexibility and self-regulation of relaxation and activation patterns." Cutting edge research articles and more information is available at the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (see www.isnr.org) This is the largest group of licensed professionals involved in the practice, teaching, and research of NT. Some members of ISNR have sought and received certification by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (see www.bcia.org). Members of ISNR subscribe to a code of ethics providing an added measure of accountability to the standards of their profession. Additionally, ISNR is committed to supporting new developments by publishing a professional journal and newsmagazine, by producing a well-attended annual conference, and by encouraging large studies of NT through the ISNR Research Foundation. We are members and support the work of ISNR, we collaborate regularly with the foremost researchers and scholars in the field.
